Role: Product Designer (Contract)
Process: Workflow analysis, SME workshops, prototyping, usability testing, UI modernization, cross-functional collaboration.
Challenge
TFI’s legacy case-management system was severely outdated—overloaded screens, inconsistent patterns, slow workflows, and high cognitive load. Caseworkers struggled to complete essential tasks, and usability issues hindered efficiency, accuracy, and onboarding.
The challenge was to modernize the UX without disrupting critical child welfare operations and design clearer workflows that aligned with compliance requirements.
Solution
I led a workflow-first redesign focused on clarity, consistency, and reduced complexity.
Key improvements:
  •  Streamlined workflows: Mapped the case lifecycle and reorganized cluttered screens into logical, task-focused flows.
  •  Simplified layouts: Reduced visual noise, introduced hierarchy, grouped related fields, and standardized components.
  •  Modernized UI: Updated patterns and interaction models while keeping them familiar enough to avoid retraining burdens.
  •  Prototyping + testing: Validated flows in Figma with caseworkers, iterating based on real feedback.
  •  Cross-team alignment: Worked closely with SMEs, BAs, and engineering to ensure feasibility, compliance, and adoption.
This approach balanced innovation with practicality—delivering designs that were cleaner, more intuitive, and significantly easier for caseworkers to navigate.
Outcome
Significant usability improvement
Coworkers reported that users gave “nothing but positive feedback” about clarity and ease of use.
Reduced complexity across key workflows
Caseworkers could complete core tasks with fewer steps and less cognitive load.
Modernized foundation for next-generation product
My design work established the patterns and structure the engineering team is now using to evolve the platform.
Positive internal alignment
Stakeholders praised my ability to absorb complex workflows quickly and translate them into intuitive design solutions.
High trust and team value
Multiple team members stated that I was instrumental to the redesign effort and that they would “be happy to work with [me] again.”
A revitalized visual system
As one testimonial put it, I "brought new life" to an extremely outdated interface.
